OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (SB 253) and the Climate Financial Risk Disclosure Act (SB 261) making it off the suspense file in Assembly Appropriations. SB 253 and SB 261 make up a package of bills that will set a new standard on corporate climate accountability for the entire nation. The bills are now headed for a vote on the Assembly floor, where SB 253 narrowly failed to pass last year by just one vote.
Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:
“We are thrilled that the corporate leadership and accountability package is in the homestretch. One hundred energy corporations are responsible for 71 percent of all global industrial carbon emissions, so no serious conversation about climate action can leave out corporate disclosures and reductions. This year, the world witnessed the hottest summer on record, and if we don’t work quickly to lower our emissions, it will become the coolest summer we’ll ever have.
The worldwide reverberations of these first-in-the-nation requirements would ensure that California and the U.S. doesn’t take a step backwards on climate leadership in 2023. Major corporations continue to step up in support of SB 253, and we applaud the Assembly for getting this bill one step closer to the Governor’s desk. But the job is not done yet.”
