San Francisco – Several of California’s top environmental community leaders affirmed their support for Senator Barbara Boxer’s re-election and raised concerns about Republican nominee Carly Fiorina’s troubling positions on environmental issues that are important to California’s economy, public health, and natural heritage.
In announcing their support for Boxer, Sierra Club Chairman Carl Pope and California League of Conservation Voters CEO Warner Chabot touted her leadership creating clean energy jobs and protecting California’s environment as chair of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works committee. Ocean Champions also announced its endorsement of Sen. Boxer’s re-election.
The environmental leaders also called attention to Senate candidate Carly Fiorina’s environmental positions that are out of step with the majority of Californians. Fiorina has expressed doubts about the science behind global warming, refers to climate change as “the weather,” and supports more off-shore oil drilling off California’s coast despite the recent BP oil spill. “Senator Boxer’s re-election is critical to create clean-energy jobs in our state and to protect our natural resources and public health. We can’t afford to elect Fiorina. She would bring California’s tradition of environmental leadership to a screeching halt,” said Warner Chabot, California League of Conservation Voters Chief Executive Officer.
“While Senator Boxer is a proven leader in creating new clean energy jobs and protecting our environment, Carly Fiorina would take us backward. Fiorina’s skepticism about global warming and her support for new offshore oil drilling off our coast show just how out of touch she is with California voters,” said Sierra Club Chairman Carl Pope.
“Ocean Champions is proud to support Senator Boxer’s re-election. Throughout her career she has been fearless in support for ocean and environmental conservation. Carly Fiorina’s support for new offshore oil drilling of our coast will hurt our environment, and our coastal economy which supports thousands of jobs,” said David Wilmot, Ph.D., Ocean Champions’ President and Co-Founder.
Boxer was first elected to the Senate in 1992 after serving 10 years in the House of Representatives and is running for reelection in 2010. She is the only Senator to chair two committees, the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Ethics Committee. She also serves on the Commerce and Foreign Relations Committees.
