OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the suspense file hearings for the Assembly and Senate Appropriations committees.
Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:
“Senate and Assembly appropriations committee results are a mixed bag. Lawmakers made progress on regional energy collaboration (SB 540) and indirect source pollution (AB 914), while holding back a key affordability measure to lower utility costs and expand water access for low-income communities (SB 350) and threatening to weaken SCAQMD’s port emissions rule development (SB 34).
In a year where multiple communities in Los Angeles burned to the ground, there’s a real question on whether California is going to lead on climate justice in 2025. The catastrophic unnatural disasters should have been a clarion call of the danger for all California communities and families. Not only are Californians dealing with the physical dangers of the climate crisis, they are also struggling with the economic impacts. These unnatural disasters caused by Big Oil are driving an affordability crisis as energy, insurance, housing, and food costs skyrocket.”
The biggest solutions to these problems have been stalled so far this legislative year. At this point, passing the remaining climate justice and action bills is the minimum necessary to make some progress on protecting communities financially and physically.”
